PREVIEW: WEEK OF 12/28/15

Tuesday and Wednesday: the POWERade tournament at Canon McMillan High School in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.  Check out the POWERade website, including seeds and schedule here.  The brackets will be on FLOARENA, which you can see here.

The Wrestling Report has called the POWERade Tournament “The toughest in PA and the 2nd best tournament in the USA.”  This year, owing to some team changes and individual injuries, it honestly doesn’t quite live up to that billing on paper.  That said, it’s still an extremely deep tournament that should provide the Porters with a heck of a competitive two days.  Lockport managed to snag five pre-seeds.  Senior captain Shayne Oster (145) and junior Abdullah Assaf (120) each picked up the 4th seed at their weight classes. Junior Trevell Timmons, in his first competition of the season returning off an injury from the fall, picked up the 6th seed at 152.  Fellow junior Brandon Ramos also snagged a 6th seed, but at 126 pounds.  Freshman Anthony Molton is the final seeded individual for the Porters, nabbing the 8th seed at 106 pounds.

In a tournament with 42 teams entered, there are always going to be some great names to watch out for, and this year’s field is full of these individuals.  In a reasonably brief effort to give fans an idea of the caliber of competition at this tournament, I’ve comprised a list of the individuals currently entered in this tournament that are nationally ranked by InterMat and/or Flowrestling.  Remember, there are TONS of great wrestlers that are unranked by either of these websites – for example, on our team, only Timmons and Oster are ranked; both by Flo but not by InterMat.  To keep this list relatively succinct, however, individuals with no national rankings are not listed, even those with otherwise fantastic credentials.

Nothing going on for the Alumni this week, but we have three Porters competing in the Midlands Tournament at Northwestern this weekend.  Jameson Oster will be competing for Northwestern at 141, Shaun'Qae McMurtry is wrestling at 165 for Northern Illinois University, and Brad Johnson will take the mat for the University of Oklahoma at 197 pounds.
