The Lockport Porters dominated throughout Friday evening and Saturday at Stagg High School, winning the Tom Lahey Invitational with 240 points, nearly one and a half times the points of the runner-up Lincoln-Way East Griffins, who finished with 170.5 points. Individually, the Porters were led by their five champions, but also had a runner-up, two fourth-place finishers, two fifth-place finishers, and two sixth-place finishers.
The Tom Lahey Invite, newly named in its second year, is essentially the SWSC Conference Tournament - but with a handful of extra teams. This year, in addition to all of the Southwest Suburban Conference schools, the tournament also included Joliet West, Joliet Central, Rock Island, and Granite City.
The Porters, putting out what appears likely to be their regional lineup for the first time all year barring any surprises, dominated the tournament, placing 12 of 14 wrestlers in the top six at their weights. Leading the way for the Porters were their five individual champions; Mike Kaminski (106), Matt Ramos (113), James Pierandozzi (138), Baylor Fernandes (145), and Zach Reese (152). Anthony Molton almost joined that group, but came up just short, finishing in 2nd place at 120. Austin Kolada (160) and Yousif Salah (182) each placed 4th, while Malik Daghash (170) and Matt Kronsbein (132) took 5th at their respective weights. Off the podium but still in placement matches were John Tomas (195) and Parker Pavlacka-Piel (220). Anthony Crapia (126) went 2-2 but came up a match short of placing, while freshman heavyweight Brendan Shin came up 0-2 on the tournament in one of the tougher heavyweight brackets in a while - 7 of the 12 heavyweights had over 20 wins on the season.
Some of the highlights of the champions of the tournament included Baylor Fernandes pinning his way through his bracket, picking up three falls, each one faster than the previous, en route to his 145 pound championship. Matt Ramos earned his 113 pound title with another victory over Andrew's Luc Valdez, an honorable mention and national qualifier this summer whom Ramos defeated in the finals at Barrington earlier this season. Zach Reese's title came via a fall, a major, and then a hard fought decision that got a bit dicey at the end, with Reese holding on for the win. Pierandozzi's title was also well earned, with James picking up two falls and a major decision in the finals (not a fall, like Track says). Finally, Mike Kaminski's 106 pound title came through three great matches - a fall in his first bout, a 3-1 decision over Kyle Silzer of Andrew (who's older brother was a 3x State Placer, now wrestling at U of I), and then picking up a 7-0 decision in the finals over a familiar face, Javen Estrada of Lincoln-Way West, who trained with Colt last off-season.
Anthony Molton's bid for his first title at this tournament came up just short again, as he fell to Stagg's Domenic Zaccone in the finals, 4-3. Molton scored the first takedown, but Zaccone was able to escape. The wrestlers traded escape points at the start of the second and third periods, and Molton held a 3-2 lead for most of the 3rd period, when Zaccone snagged a takedown with about 20 seconds left in the bout to take a 4-3 lead. Zaccone was able to keep Molton down, and earned a title. Molton commented later that this was the third time he's taken second to Zaccone at this tournament, but hopes to play spoiler next year and not allow Zaccone to become a 4x champ, if they're at the same weight.
