Summary

Thursday night’s dual against Joliet West was far too close for comfort for Lockport fans.  After falling behind early, it was a back and forth battle between the Porters and Tigers until the very end.  After Ronald Tucker grabbed a 4-1 decision at 285 pounds to put the Porters down by 5, Anthony Molton stepped on the mat to receive a forfeit at 106 pounds, giving Lockport a 38-37 victory.

The dual started at 113 pounds, where Matt Kronsbein was able to hold #5 ranked Darvell Flagg of Joliet West to an 11-2 major decision, a factor that would be crucial at the end of the night.  After Garrett Golob lost by fall to Joliet West’s #11 Austin Poch, Lockport found itself in a 10-0 hole early on.

#2 Abdullah Assaf took the mat for Lockport at 126 and was able to score a 19-3 technical fall, which would prove to be a critical victory by the night’s end.  HM Brendan Ramsey followed Assaf’s performance with a fall at 132 to give Lockport an 11-10 lead after four matches.

The teams would split the next four matches, with HM Dalton Dwyer losing by fall to fellow HM Roman Johnson at 138 pounds, allowing Joliet West to retake the lead.  Joliet West extended their lead to 19-11 with a 6-4 OT victory over Lockport’s Zach Reese. 145 #2 Shayne Oster, wrestling at 152 today, and Chandler Proszek at 160, were able to both score first period falls, allowing Lockport to reclaim the lead in the team score, 23-19.

Lockport surrendered the lead again at 170, when Nick Dado was pinned halfway through the second, but Yousif Salah was able to score a quick 0:21 second fall at 182 to regain the lead for the Porters.

Joliet West was able to secure wins by fall at both 195 and 220, over Austin Atwood and Dan Stojsavljevic, respectively, to take a 37-29 lead into the final two matches.  Ronald Tucker’s decision at 285 sealed the dual for Lockport with the ensuing forfeit coming to Anthony Molton at 106.

In a dual with a pair of quality starters sitting out for Lockport, bonus points were the biggest story of the night.  Both teams notched 7 victories on the night.  Joliet West was able to win five matches by fall, whereas Lockport had four falls and one forfeit, keeping the score even.  Each team also only scored one victory by decision.  The difference makers in the dual were Assaf’s ability at 126 to get a technical fall, and Kronsbein being able to hold one of the state’s best 113 pounders to a major decision.  On a night where the team did not look at their best, giving up far too many bonus points, those were the deciding factors in getting the victory for the Porters.

Lockport, now 4-1 on the year, will be competing tonight and tomorrow at Fox Senior High School at the 43rd annual Ron Sauer duals.  Follow the action live on TrackWrestling if you can’t make the trip.  We will also be live-tweeting results on our Twitter, @LTHSWrestling.
